Who would have expected that Homer Simpson would incite a patent war? According to
The Hollywood Reporter, Alki David’s HologramUSA filed a lawsuit Thursday against 20
th Century Fox and Gracie Films, alleging that a 3D representation of the popular
Simpsons character that stunned San Diego Comic-Con attendees infringes on HologramUSA’s patented system that projects 3D holograms on a stage.
The hologram made its debut July 26 in celebration of
The Simpsons’ 25
th anniversary and to promote the new Simpsos World app.
The technology has been at the center of controversy before; a suit has been filed against Pulse Entertainment over the technology patent, and earlier this year, a suit was filed concerning the Michael Jackson hologram that debuted at the Billboard Music Awards. The technology has been used to create the Tupac Shakur hologram that took the world by storm when it debuted at Coachella.
The plaintiffs, which include Musion Das Hologram and Uwe Maass, are looking for damages for willful infringement. The suit states that the creators of the Homer hologram “did not obtain a license or any other authorization to use the Patented Technology for the Performance.”
